Living School In The News

Bishop Gallagher a ‘Living School’
May 4, 2004

Thunder Bay Chronicle (By: Kelly Leydier)

Beginning in September, Bishop Gallagher School will be one of nine Living Schools across the province. Hip-hop dancers and Pilates instructors will be present at the school as part of this project aimed at getting children away from the television and onto their feet. Physical Education teacher, Shelley Taylor, has recruited the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and the city’s parks and recreation department to support the program. Plans include giving the students fresh fruit twice a week, workshops on substance abuse, improving the health curriculum and developing an intramural program. The school will receive a t least $5,000 in government funding, which the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board has agreed to match. The Board also plans to add a soccer field, basketball court and professional long jump and triple jump pits to the Bishop Gallagher playground.
