There’s a whole lotta livin’ going on at Sanford Avenue

Sanford Avenue Public School was chosen for the Living School initiative because it was an inner city school that has struggled with health and literacy problems associated with poverty. Ophea consultant, Margaret Good, worked with the school teaching them how to form links with the community. The school had tried other programs in the past, but none had transformed Sanford into a thriving environment that’s more conducive to learning like the Living School project did. Thanks to a brainstorming session with representatives from the public health department, parks and recreation, community groups and parents, the school now has a nutrition program, a free after-school program and a literacy program. Running shoes were even purchased for those students who didn’t have the proper footwear to participate in the school’s basketball house league. The program has helped Sanford to secure more than $100,000 in community grants that will make it possible for the school to continue developing programs.
